My device is charging slowly. What should I do?Updated 5 months ago
There are a variety of reasons why your device may be charging slower than usual. Charging speed is heavily reliant on quite a lot of variables, but the most important is the current battery drain.
If you are using your phone while charging, at full brightness, with Bluetooth and WiFi on, playing a mobile game with intricate graphics, your phone will charge a lot slower than if you were to leave it on your desk, not in use, for example. It is also important to note that the % of battery charge per minute is heavily reliant on the size of the battery of the device you are charging. An iPhone has a smaller battery than an iPad, so the % charge per minute will be higher for an iPhone versus an iPad, all else being equal.
Introduced in iOS13, Apple released an "Optimized Battery Charging" feature. For many iOS devices, this option will be turned on by default. While this setting can be good to use for the long-term health of your device's battery, it is important to note that it will dramatically reduce charging speeds when your device is at 80% battery or higher. This trade-off may or may not be worth it to you, based on your use. This is not an issue with your charging cable or wireless charger, it is a software-driven setting.
If you'd like to change this setting, you can do so on your iOS device via Settings > Battery > Battery Health > Optimized Battery Charging If Optimized Battery Charging is OFF - your device will charge normally.
If Optimized Battery Charging is ON - your device will dramatically slow down, or completely stop, charging at 80%, and likely finish charging the remaining 80-100% overnight, based on your daily charging routine.
