My wireless charger stops charging or keeps connecting and disconnectingUpdated a day ago

Troubleshooting

Issue: wireless charger not working, charging stops, keeps disconnecting, AirPods keep chiming

If your phone starts charging and then stops, your AirPods keep chiming, or nothing charges at all, the cause is usually power, positioning or your case. Try these steps in order.

1. Check the power adapter.
Wireless chargers need enough power from the wall to charge properly. If the adapter is too weak, charging often starts and stops. Here’s how to check yours:

  1. Find what your charger needs. Look for the Input line on the bottom of your wireless charger or on its product page, for example Input: 9V⎓2A / 15V⎓2A. [CONFIRM: input rating per model]
  2. Find what your adapter delivers. Look at the small print on your wall adapter for the Output line.
  3. Compare the two. Your adapter’s output should include at least one of the voltage and current combinations your charger needs. To work out watts, multiply volts by amps (V × A = W). For example, 15V × 2A = 30W.

Examples of what you might see on an adapter:

Adapter label (Output)Max powerOK for a wireless charger?
5V⎓1A5W❌ Too low. This is common on older phone cubes.
5V⎓2.4A (USB-A)12W❌ Too low for fast wireless charging, and has no USB-C PD.
5V⎓3A, 9V⎓2.22A20W⚠️ May work, but only if your charger’s input lists 9V. [CONFIRM per model]
5V⎓3A, 9V⎓3A, 15V⎓2A, 20V⎓1.5A30W✅ Covers 15V⎓2A, which suits most multi-device wireless chargers.

Tip: If your adapter has several USB-C ports, the power is shared between them. Unplug other devices while you test.

2. Plug straight into the wall. Avoid laptop USB ports, USB hubs and power strips with built-in USB ports while you test.

3. Try a different cable. Use another USB-C cable you know works.

4. Check your case. Remove the case and try again. Thick cases, card wallets, grips and metal plates can block wireless charging. If you use a case, make sure it is MagSafe compatible.

5. Position the device properly. Centre your phone on the pad. On 2-in-1 and 3-in-1 chargers, give each device its own pad and make sure AirPods sit flat in the centre.

6. Clear the pad. Remove keys, coins or cards between the device and the charger.

7. Reset everything. Unplug the charger for 30 seconds, restart your phone, then plug the charger back in.

Good to know: If your phone or AirPods chime repeatedly, or your phone keeps showing its battery level, the device is starting and stopping charging. Steps 1, 4 and 5 usually fix this. Your phone may also pause charging when it gets warm, which is normal. See My device gets a bit warm when charging. Should I be concerned?
