When charging wirelessly, my device stops charging at 80%Updated a year ago
This typically happens when your wireless charger is connected to an underpowered wall charger, such as a laptop USB port or an in-box 5W iPhone charger.
Our wireless chargers typically require a wall charger with minimum 10W power. If you’re using a thicker phone case, pairing with a QC or PD wall charger will make the wireless charger more powerful as well. We recommend our Smart Charger PD 20W or Smart Hub PD 45W for fast-charging, multi-device options.
If you’re having problems with charging performance, we recommend the below:
- Make sure the phone is placed exactly in the center of the charging area
- Avoid placing the charger in hot locations (do not place it near a heater, in direct sunlight, etc)
- Make sure your iPhone is updated to the latest iOS
- Pair with a wall charger with minimum 10W power (do NOT use the small 5W Apple iPhone charger or a computer USB Port)
- Do not use a phone case containing metal or other accessories like rings
- Remove thick phone cases before wireless charging (charging through thick phone cases can be improved with an 18W (or more) QC or PD charger)
If the above steps don't fix the issue, your device may have "Optimized Battery Charging" enabled, which could be to blame.
Introduced in iOS13, Apple released an "Optimized Battery Charging" feature. For many iOS devices, this option will be turned on by default. While this setting can be good to use for the long-term health of your device's battery, it is important to note that it will dramatically reduce charging speeds when your device is at 80% battery or higher. This trade-off may or may not be worth it to you, based on your use. This is not an issue with your charging cable or wireless charger, it is a software-driven setting. If you'd like to change this setting, you can do so on your iOS device via Settings > Battery > Battery Health > Optimized Battery Charging If Optimized Battery Charging is OFF - your device will charge normally. If Optimized Battery Charging is ON - your device will dramatically slow down, or completely stop, charging at 80%, and likely finish charging the remaining 80-100% overnight, based on your daily charging routine. We recommend our Fast GaN Chargers for fast-charging, multi-device options.
